English 112A                Ms. Spurr-MacKay

Language Arts Goals:   Speaking and Listening

                                    Reading and Viewing

                                    Writing and Representing

SMART Goal:  Through the use of a neatly organized writing folder, students will demonstrate their growth of skills in these areas and explore their own thoughts about various issues discussed in class readings.

I Short Stories

Students will read a collection of short stories and respond to a variety of writer styles.  Discussion and assignments will focus on elements and common themes.  Thoughtful writing and responses will be expected.  As well as quizzes and homework, a final unit test will accompany this unit.

II Frankenstein

This challenging novel will focus on the life and times of the Gothic period.  A MLA format essay will be the conclusion of this unit, as well as homework and writing assignments.

III The Catcher in the Rye

Once again discussions and in-class assignments will be the focus of this unit.  Students will study an author’s use of character.

IV Literary Circles

Students will have the opportunity to explore, discuss and study various novels in a group setting.

V Non-fiction Readings

Various non-fiction writings will be examined and critically analyzed.

VI Novella: The Palace Thief

This wonderful story by Ethan Canin is a microcosm of some events and characters in the real world.

I would prefer that you use a binder for this course, as I will be giving you many handouts.  You will also need to bring your own paper and pens.  All assignments must be completed in blue/black pen, or typed.  You will be given a consistent amount of homework throughout the semester and you must have your own novel each day.  Having your novel and doing your homework are worth marks.  Your portfolios are folders which will contain many of your marked assignments and your best or favorite writing assignments.

Regarding rules, I have a few.  You many have water, but you cannot have food, or any other kind of liquids.  Be on time; there will be consequences for tardiness.  Also, come prepared for class.  That means bring your English binder, novel, any text, or novel I may give you and pens, pencils, erasers and paper.  Please respect the classroom.  Don’t write on, or put things in the desks.

I look forward to working with you all this semester.  I am sure that it will be both rewarding and productive.
