Grade 10 English

Ms. Spurr-MacKay

Dear Students:                                                                                                                                                      September

Welcome back to Hampton High!  I will be your English teacher and I’d like to let you know a few things about this course. First of all, please keep this letter in your English notebook, as you will want to refer back to it during the year.

We will have English everyday during this time all year long.  I would prefer that you use a binder for this course, as I will be giving you many handouts.  You will also need to bring your own paper and pens.  All assignments must be completed in blue, or black pen, or typed.  Please divide your binder into the following units:

          Journal

          Quotes

          Spelling

          Grammar

          Writing

          Process of Writing

          Short Stories

          Novel

          Poetry

          Shakespeare

Regarding marks, here is the break down:

Homework/Class work

20%

Tests/Quizzes

20%

Essays/Writing

20%

Midterm

10%

Exams

30%

You will be given a consistent amount of homework throughout the year and you must have your own novel each day.  (I have quite a selection to choose from in my classroom, or you can bring your own.)  I check each day that you have your novel and/or that your homework is completed.

Your portfolios are folders, which contain many of your marked assignments and your best, or favourite works.  Please take this home

occasionally to show your parents how talented you are!

Regarding rules, I have a few.  You may have water, but you cannot have food, or any other kind of liquids.  Be on time; there will be consequences for tardiness.  Also, come prepared for class.  That means bring your English binder, novel, any text I may give you and pens, pencils, erasers and paper.  Please respect the classroom.  Don’t write on, or put things in the desks.

I look forward to working with you this year.  I am sure it will be rewarding and interesting.
